BMW Unveils Electrified 2025 M5 with Hefty Power Upgrade

1 Mins read

BMW has officially launched the 2025 M5, marking the seventh generation of its iconic sports sedan. This new M5 introduces a plug-in hybrid system, a first for the model, blending a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 717 horsepower—a significant increase from the previous top-tier M5 CS’s 627 hp.

Despite the power boost, the 2025 M5 carries a notable weight of 5,390 pounds due to its hybrid components, nearly a thousand pounds heavier than its predecessor. Nonetheless, BMW has implemented weight-saving measures such as a plastic engine oil sump to mitigate the increase.

Performance metrics remain impressive with the hybrid M5, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and achieving a standard top speed of 155 mph, which can be extended to 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

The M5’s drivetrain features a 577 hp V-8 and a 194 hp electric motor, powered by a 14.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering an estimated electric-only range of 25 miles. The vehicle incorporates adaptive dampers and a sophisticated suspension setup, including unique double wishbones at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.

Wheel and brake setups are robust, with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, complemented by large brake rotors and capable calipers. The M5’s all-wheel-drive system enhances efficiency and maintains a rear-drive bias, which can be emphasized in the 4WD Sport mode or switched to exclusive rear-wheel drive with stability control off.

Visually, the M5 stands out with its large front intakes, quad-tip sports exhaust, and optional illuminated grille. Inside, the M5 features distinctive digital displays, ambient lighting, and premium materials, with many luxury options from the 5-Series standard in the M5.

A notable addition for drivers is the Boost Control function, providing a temporary performance enhancement under specific conditions, furthering the M5’s dynamic capabilities.

Set to debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed and go on sale in the last quarter of the year, the 2025 BMW M5 is priced starting at $120,675. An M5 Touring wagon variant is also anticipated, extending the model’s appeal to a broader audience.
